Mike Myers host of tonight’s MTV Movie Awards

45-year-old comic actor Mike Myers - in an effort to help promote his upcoming film “The Love Guru” with Jessica Alba is hosting the MTV Movie Awards tonight.

He said:

“I have learned to have way more fun doing these shows. And I’m already excited. I think the last time … it was nerve-racking. Now I know exactly what it is, and it’s just fun.”

Other presenters for the MTV Movie Awards include Lindsay Lohan, Katharine McPhee and Anne Hathaway.

Nominees this year include Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, Denzel Washington, Will Smith and Ellen Page.

The Class is best in class at 61st Cannes Film Festival earning Palme d’Or

Sean Penn, the jury head awarded the Palme d’Or prize for this year’s Cannes Film Festival to French film “The Class” about life in a tough Parisian school.  The film directed by Laurent Cantet uses real students and teachers in chronicling a year in their lives.  It is a film based on an autobiographical novel by young teacher Francois Begaudeau - and was praised by Penn as “an amazing, amazing film.”  In accepting the award, Cantet said that he aimed to make a film that was “a reflection of French society - multiple, many-faceted, [and] complex.  Sometimes also with friction that the film does not try to cover up.”

Hunger” a portrayal of the last six week of Irish Republican Army hunger striker Bobby Sands took the Camera d’Or prize for best first feature film. 

Benecio Del Toro won best Actor for his portrayal of Ernesto “Che” Guevara in the Steven Soderbergh biopic entitled simply “Che” - “I’d like to dedicate this to the man himself, Che Guevara” said Del Toro in accepting the award.

Brazilian star Sandra Corveloni won best Actress for playing a pregnant mother of four in Sao Paolo in the film “Line of Passage.”

Clint Eastwood (who also directed “Changeling” starring Angelina Jolie) and Catherine Deneuve won lifetime achievement awards at the French festival’s closing ceremony.

Sean Penn praised the quality of films in this year’s festival stating: 

“There was a field of such powerful, emotional, moving movies and performances, there were so many times that we thought it just can’t get better.”

Italian mafia movie “Gomorrah,” set in Naples and based on a novel by Roberto Saviana, took the Grand Prix runner-up prize.

The third place jury prize went to “Il Divo,” Paolo Sorrentino’s portrait of the country’s former prime minister, Giulio Andreotto.

Whoopi Goldberg to host 62nd Annual Tony Awards

Whoopi to host Tony AwardsTony Award and Academy Award winner, Whoopi Goldberg, will host the 62nd Annual Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards® on Sunday, June 15 live from Radio City Music Hall.

The Tony Awards will air live on CBS from 8:00-11:00PM (ET/PT time delay).

Whoopi Goldberg said:

“I’m very excited to be hosting the Tony Awards… I love Broadway and I’m thrilled to be doing anything for the first time. I’m gonna have a blast.”

Whoopi Goldberg is one of a very elite group of artists who have won the Grammy (“Whoopi Goldberg,” 1985), the Academy Award (“Ghost,” 1991), the Golden Globe (“The Color Purple,” 1985 and “Ghost,” 1991), the Emmy (as host of AMC’s “Beyond Tara: The Extraordinary Life of Hattie McDaniel,” 2002) and a Tony (Producer of “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” 2002), as well as countless other awards and honors as an actor, producer, host and author. She currently moderates “The View” on ABC.

21st Annual Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards

The 21st Annual Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards featuring Hollywood stars such as Harrison Ford, Cameron Diaz and Orlando Bloom were held this weekend. The big winner was 15-year-old Miley Cyrus- the star of Disney’s “Hannah Montana” was awarded favorite TV actress and favorite singer.

Diaz won the “Wannabe” prize for a celebrity role model that children look up to.
