“Religilous” – Bill Maher & Larry Charles have a sense of humor about religion

If you ask me what’s wrong with America at this current moment in time, I would probably point to religion.
The practice or non-practice of religion as well as the focus on religion in the wars that the US is waging abroad (one a valid war and one an obvious mistake) and in the campaign for Presidency that should hopefully come to an end in about 50 days from now religion has become an even bigger part of the equation.
First, it was Obama’s pastor spewing nonsense to disenfranchised South Chicago believers which Obama had to disavow himself from (I think Obama is an agnostic personally but is too afraid to admit it and by no means is he a Muslim.) Now its the pro-life McCain picking Sarah Palin, a no-experience Governor from the 47th most populous state who believes in creationism and is pro-life as well.
In essence this election comes down to who do you trust to run the United States and the world – a former legal scholar and obviously brilliant mind like Barack Obama’s (with the help of Senator Joe Biden) or God (represented on Earth or in the White House by a hot-tempered former Prisoner-Of-War and his very average PTA mom side-kick Sarah Palin.)
Larry Charles, the director of “Borat” and of the upcoming “Religilous” says:
“You can’t get elected in America without having a religious affiliation. And it wasn’t always that way.”
Charles uses the same tactics he used in the 2006 Sacha Baron Cohen hit with Bill Maher as his centerpiece strolling on to the streets and asking people of all sorts uncomfortable questions.
Scenes are edited to generally leave people looking foolish. But the more revealing moments seem to require little embellishment, such as conversations that show two Vatican priests to be among the most moderate voices in the film.
The Vatican priests in the film profess a belief in evolution rather than in the Creation story of Adam and Eve, which many religious and political leaders say they take literally.
Charles thinks that his movie can help to defeat McCain and Palin adding that “Tens of millions of us don’t think a lot about religion either way.”
Let’s just say I think that Maher and Charles are already preaching to the choir and the religious in the US that outnumbers the non-religious will not be paying attention.
