Bangkok Dangerous wins worst box office weekend in 5 years

When I heard the title of the film “Bangkok Dangerous” I was immediately convinced the film was about sexually transmitted diseases, but after seeing this picture of Nicolas Cage I now know that it was that cowboy hat they were referring to.
NFL, school, the MTV Video Music Awards, the Republican and Democratic conventions as well as poor new offerrings contributed to making this past weekend the worst box office weekend in the past five years.
Nicolas Cage’s action thriller “Bangkok Dangerous” won the weekend with a measly $7.8 million to take the top spot for Lionsgate.
The total weekend box-office gross was about $66 million, less than the $66.7 million reported for the same weekend in September 2003.
“Bangkok Dangerous,” a remake of a 1999 Asian movie that opened on 2,650 screens, performed within Lionsgate’s expectations, said Steve Rothenberg, the studio’s vice president.
In second place was the action-comedy “Tropic Thunder,” starring Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. The film earned $7.5million in its fourth week in theaters reaching a total of $96.8 million.
In third place was “The House Bunny” with $5.9 million, giving the Anna Faris film a total of $37 million after three weeks.
“The Dark Knight” added $5.7 million to its total now at $512 million, the second largest domestic box office performer of all-time.
