The Smurfs to get big screen treatment from Sony

True story, but recently while at the Cannes Film Festival in France I was slapped by a French dude from Monaco because I told him jokingly (he didn’t realize this) in French that his mother sucks smurfs.
Well, coincidentally, the Smurfs - celebrating their 50th anniversary this year have announced that they will be producing a film with Sony’s Columbia Pictures.
The Belgian characters owned by Lafig Belgium will be adapted for the big screen with graphic imagery and live action. Much like the succesful “Alvin and the Chipmunks” movie from 20th Century Fox and New Regency last year.
The Smurfs will be created by CGI and interact with real actors portraying humans.
The Smurfs, simply drawn, diminutive beings — just “three apples tall” — with blue skin, white trousers and white caps, rank among the most widely recognized cartoon characters in the world. The Smurfs number over 100 characters, the mostly male individuals all share the Smurf moniker and a descriptive first name — such as Lazy Smurf, Grouchy Smurf, Brainy Smurf and Grandpa Smurf. (Let’s not forget the uber-sexy Smurfette)
Created in 1958 by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, aka Peyo, the Smurfs first appeared in a series of Belgium comic strips and were originally called Les Schtroumpfs in French
