BOPsy elaborates on Revised Box-office estimates and weekend multipliers….
Here is a letter to our staff that we have re-printed from one of our e-mail subscribers (remember you can request to be an e-mail update subscriber by e-mailing boxofficepsychics@gmail.com and putting a subject heading of “ADD ME”)
Dear BOPsy,
Why do you do revised estimates on Saturdays?
Also, do you say what the actual was on Monday, and if not, why not?
Just wondering!!
CZ
Dear CZ,
We do revised estimates because after Friday you can get a pretty clear indication of what the weekend will look like by using something called “weekend multipliers.” For example, certain films - like horror films do really well on Friday night and not as well on Saturday and Sunday, so you give them a low multiplier like a 2.1 or a 2.3 and certain films don’t perform well on Friday nights when teens go to see the movies and they do better on Saturday and Sunday - family films for example - so they can get multipliers as high as 3.4 or 3.5 of the Friday box office number.
We generally do not do e-mails or updates on Monday box office numbers because our Sunday update is enough data - Friday and Saturday is sufficient to accurately estimate Sunday’s box office so that the change on Monday’s actuals is very little to non-existent.
If people wanted us to do a Monday estimate or to explain more of our methodology we’d be open to that too. So let us know!
