No Country for Old Men expands screen count for weekend

The good people at Miramax must have been listening to me…
After demonstrating how 4 Oscar wins still hadn’t affected Monday’s box office numbers for “No Country for Old Men“, Miramax has decided to push the domestic theater count this weekend from 1,101 screens to 2,030 screens and to target more effectively areas that might not have had access to the medium sized psuedo-art-house action drama.
Historically, films winning best picture see an uptick in theatrical receipts – if they are still playing by the time the Academy Awards ceremony is held. In the case of both “Crash” (2005) and “The Departed” (2006) the films were available on DVD by that time and made extra money in that window.
Variety predicts that ‘No Country’ will make an additional $10 to $20 million from this expansion and end up at $75 to $85 million in domestic box office.
