No Box-Office bounce for “No Country for Old Men” after Oscar win
After winning the Oscar for Best Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor Javier Bardem for the film “No Country for Old Men” did not get a post-Oscar push from the wins at the box-office on Monday.
After posting an impressive Sunday total of $695,000 following the Academy Awards, the next night the film only earned $350,000 (which is lower than last Monday’s $411,187 however that amount was earned on President’s Day) which was only a modest increase from two and three week’s ago on Monday. The film which has thus far earned $64.6 million dollars in 16 weeks of release and remains on 1,101 screens. Therefore it is most likely that the film’s domestic total will end with approximately $15 to $20 million dollars depending on a post-Oscar marketing campaign that I anticipate that Miramax will start waging this weekend.
“Juno” which only won a single Oscar (for Best Original Screenplay) will cross the $131 million dollar box-office mark tomorrow as it earned $331,432 in box office on Monday thereby signalling the beginning of the box-office decline for this film now in its 12th week of release. This could indicate the film will end up with a tally of nearly $150 million in domestic box office. International box office for “Juno” is at $30 million with a large share ($13.4 million and $9 million) coming from the United Kingdom and Australia respectively. Since most of the international releases began the last week of January and the first week of February it is likely that the film can achieve a $55 to $60 million dollar international total which would mean that “Juno” could achieve a $200 million worldwide number which surpasses the $197 million “Beowulf” grossed and comes very close to “Knocked Up” total of $219 million in worldwide box-office ($149 million domestic, $70 million international.)
Director Jason Reitman’s first film with Fox Searchlight “Thank You for Smoking” by comparison earned $24.8 million domestic in 26 weeks of release and only $14.4 million internationally.
