‘Definitely, Maybe’ – a chick-flick I didn’t mind watching…
There’s a lot of reasons not to like 31-year-old Ryan Reynolds. He’s much better looking than you, he dates Scarlett Johansson (he’s also dated Rachael Leigh Cook and Alanis Morissette), at 6′2″ and a half he’s probably taller than you and he’s Canadian…
After “Van Wilder” “Waiting” and “Just Friends” and now “Definitely, Maybe” the guy has grown on me. He’s got this likable quality and well OK, fine, I admit it- I’ve got a man-crush on him.
“Definitely, Maybe” has Reynolds as ‘Will Hayes’ father to eleven-year-old Abigail Breslin (”Little Miss Sunshine.”) Essentially the movie revolves around his character telling her about he met her mother while he was also involved with two other women. Changing the names of the women in the story, he never reveals to her who her mother is – which keeps her character and the viewer guessing.
The college sweetheart ‘Emily’ is played by Elizabeth Banks (”Wet Hot American Summer“) who he leaves for Clinton’s 1992 campaign run in New York where he meets ‘April’ played by Sacha Baron Cohen’s new Australian wife Isla Fisher (”Wedding Crashers“) and also gets involved with journalist ‘Summer Hartley’ played by Rachel Weisz.
The film is actually quite charming. All four leads are attractive and the performances are engaging. Isla Fisher is endearing and pulls off the American accent and Reynolds and Breslin, although illogically father and daughter do have on-screen chemistry and work well together.
