‘Hole in the Wall’ - Japanese show coming to Fox
You know the United States has lost all of its remaining soul when Hollywood execs resort to copying the formats of insane Japanese TV shows. Not that this is a bad thing of course, it just has to be said. So I’ve said it.
This week, Fox network and “American Idol” producer FremantleMedia North America will combine to produce a U.S. version of the successful Japanese gameshow “Hole in the Wall.”
A cross between the fictional “Running Man” movie and NBC’s “American Gladiators” in some ways, “Hole in The Wall” is essentially the human version of the videogame Tetris. Players, (hopefully) dressed in spandex and hard hats, lie facing down on a moving conveyor belt and try to go through ever-changing cut-out shapes. Players have to contort their bodies every which way in order to fit through the wall or else end up being swept into a pool of water.
Players compete in teams, making coordination and quick thinking necessary to win. Teams gain or lose points depending on whether they manage to stay dry through each round.
Fuji TV launched “Hole in the Wall” in July 2006. Since that time, FremantleMedia has produced eight international versions of the format in Australia, Russia, India and others.
FremantleMedia executive Cecile Frot-Coutaz said the format:
“has a universal comedic appeal with viewers of all ages across multiple platforms”
The clips of “Hole in the Wall” (like the one below) that were posted on YouTube have attracted more than 5 million hits during the past six to nine months.
