Strike is over…. (almost)
Dust off your typewriters and call off that order for an ounce of prescription Maui Wowee, its back to work time very soon.
“Three people close to the talks” are now confirming to the LA Times, and New York Times, as well as announcements on Los Angeles area radio stations pronouncing “the strike is over.”
No official announcements have been made by either the WGA or the AMPTP.
The jubilation city and industry-wide may begin as early as Friday when all the T’s and I’s are dotted by the negotiators and the agreement is approved by a majority of the WGA membership who by now are not only weary of their leverage against the studios but are probably also sick of the ill-will against them from viewers who are sick of watching shows like “Moment of Truth” and “My Dad can beat up your Dad.”
We are sure that 10,500 members of the WGA are not that stupid!
Most eagerly awaiting the return of the writers is the telecast of the February 24th Academy Awards which will in many ways be a symbolic celebration ceremony that all parties in Hollywood can now play again nicely.
Guild negotiators David Young, Patric M. Verrone and John Bowman are scheduled Monday to brief the union’s negotiating committee board on the proposed deal.’
The AMPTP’s contract with actors expires on June 30th, and leaders of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) — a consistent ally of the writers throughout the strike — have said they did not expect to begin negotiations early. AFTRA which also represents actors and often negotiates with SAG said that it will be negotiating with companies on its own soon.
