Josh Hartnett to kick ass in ‘Bunraku’
Indie producers Snoot Entertainment and Picturesque Films have enlisted the acting services of one Josh Hartnett (”Pearl Harbor“) for the upcoming film “Bunraku.”
The film takes its name from the traditional Japanese puppet theater but its a live-action re-telling of the traditional spaghetti Western, samurai themed film about a stranger coming to town. And the stranger kicking some ass in that town.
Director Guy Moshe (critically acclaimed festival film “Holly“) is on board as are Nava Levin, Albertino Matalon and Matthew Zamias of Picturesque Films as well as producers Ram Bergman, Keith Calder, Jessica Wu and Executive Producer David Matalon.
The 29-year-old Hartnett plays the ‘Drifter’ in an original universe created by Moshe (in the vein of “Sin City” or “300“) that is said to be a mixed bag of influences including origami, comic books, video games and German expressionism, according to the film’s producers.
Producers are looking to commence principal photography in Romania and have enlisted production designer Alex McDowell (”Minority Report“) as co-producer.
Both Hartnett and director Guy Moshe are represented by uber-talent-agency CAA and Hartnett will soon be seen in “I Come With the Rain” and “August” which just premiered at Sundance.
At the Sundance Film Festival, actor Josh Hartnett revealed to MTV that he was going to be a part of “Bunraku,”
“It’s not fantasy. Well, I mean, it’s fantasy in that it’s not reality, but it’s not ‘Narnia, It’s a film that, I don’t know how to stick it into a genre, but I would say it’s more a film like ‘Sin City’ than anything else.”
Hartnett was at Sundance last week to promote upcoming dot-com drama “August,” “Bunraku” has shuffled his upcoming film schedule considerably. Soon he’ll continue his film-festival tour with a trip to Cannes to promote the Hong Kong private-eye flick “I Come With the Rain.” And indie football drama “Endzone” won’t begin filming until 2009 at the earliest.
