CBS buys Canadian series “Flashpoint”

CBS has announced that they are buying the US rights to a Canadian-made police drama “Flashpoint.”
The deal comes after CBS - affected by the writers strike - and a bunch of canceled production deals - needed content. Other Canadian shows being looked at by US networks hurt by the strike are “The Listener” (NBC is looking at this show about a telepathic young paramedic) and “The Border” (was pitched hard last week to network execs in Las Vegas).
CBS is footing a large part of the $1.5 million bill for the 13-part series of “Flashpoint” from the show’s producing partners, Toronto-based Avamar Entertainment and Pink Sky Entertainment.
CBS says that the “Flashpoint” deal is one example of a new business model that would permit the network to save the expense of producing a pilot. It would also save significant sums on the show’s production, which was creatively shaped and funded by CTV prior to the producers taking it to CBS.
