Roger Avary’s Italian guest dead – Avary free on $50K bail
In a follow-up to yesterday’s report that 42-year-old Oscar-winning screenwriter of “Pulp Fiction” Roger Avary, accused of drunk driving this weekend and killing a passenger visiting from Italy is now apologizing.
The deceased passenger, named Andreas Zini was 34-years old. Zini was pulled out of the car by fire department workers and due to “blunt force chest and abdominal injuries” Zini died in the hospital several hours later. The fatality occurred as Avary was driving early Sunday and his car spun out of control hitting a telephone pole in Ojai, California. He was then arrested and booked on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and felony drunk driving.
Zini, a resident of Italy who was apparently visiting Avary and his wife, Gretchen, 40, according to the Ojai’s sheriff’s department. Gretchen Avary (Roger’s wife) was also seriously injured but is expected to survive, said Capt. Jerry Hernandez.
Avary’s publicist Julie Polkes released this statement:
“Roger wishes to publicly convey his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased,” …. “Words cannot express how sorry he is, and this tragic accident will always haunt him.”
Avary, who is free on $50,000 bail, faces arraignment Friday.
As mentioned, Avary won an Academy Award along with Quentin Tarantino for co-writing “Pulp Fiction,” and he was also a co-writer of the recent CGI epic “Beowulf.” He and his wife live in Ojai, an artists’ colony and tourist destination near Ventura County, northwest of Los Angeles.
