BOPsy’s Golden Globe Award predictions

Amy Ryan in Gone Baby Gone
BOPsy predicts that Amy Ryan will win Best Supporting Golden Globe for “Gone Baby Gone”

Despite an $80 million loss to the Los Angeles area economy, the writer’s strike has forced a cancellation of the Golden Globes Awards ceremony and show, instead there will be no awards show and instead a one hour telecast of the press conference announcing the winners. Here are our picks for the winners of the 65th Annual Golden Globe Awards:

MOTION PICTURES

MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA

We get a really good reading that the much lauded “No Country For Old Men” will win in this ridiculous 7 film nominations category. It along with our 2nd choice “There Will Be Blood” is the most often mentioned as best film of the year and was also our pick for the best film of 2007.

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA

We predict that Angelina Jolie will win for her performance in “A Mighty Heart” for one reason and one reason alone- the Hollywood Foriegn Press Associatins are whores and her star-power (before the telecast was cancelled anyhow) would have been reason enough to honor her here. Our second choice would be for Julie Christie’s performance in “Away From Her” and a third place nod for Keira Knightley in “Atonement.”

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA

Daniel Day-Lewis will win for his performance as Daniel Plainview in “There Will Be Blood”

MOTION PICTURE - COMEDY OR MUSICAL

The momentum behind “Juno” will propel it to win this category filled with flops and silly nominees. A small chance for both “Hairspray” and “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” exists, but we’re going with “Juno.”

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE - COMEDY OR MUSICAL

So many equally good performances in this category make it difficult to call, Amy Adams was enchanting in “Enchanted” and Nikki Blonsky popular in “Hairspray” however it looks like the award will either go to Ellen Page for “Juno” or our favorite choice Marion Cotillard who embodied Edith Piaf in “La Vie en rose”

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE - COMEDY OR MUSICAL

Most of the nominees in this category under-delivered compared to their career best performances and to me only Philip Seymour Hoffman’s performance in “The Savages” is award worthy. So we’ll go with him, although it would be nice to see Ryan Gosling recognized for “Lars and the Real Girl” despite the fact his acting work there was not as dynamic as last year’s “Half Nelson.”

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM

Pixar always wins. Never question it. We’re going with “Ratatouille

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

The Hollywood Foreign Press have chosen a cadre of films not subject to the same strict regulations as the Oscars so its hard to call it. This is too difficult a race to call, although an amazing film, I think Romania’s “4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days” will be too depressing and Ang Lee’s “Lust, Caution” was great yet not talked about enough so we’ll give the edge to the French film directed by Julian Schnabel “The Diving Bell And The Butterfly

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE

I haven’t seen “Gone Baby Gone” but Amy Ryan’s performance there is the talk of the town so it will be our favorite. Of the films we’ve seen (all the rest of the nominees) we’re going with Tilda Swinton for her amazing performance as the businessy queen of mean in “Michael Clayton.”

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE

Such great performances in this category, and although Casey Affleck’s performance as Robert Ford in “The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford” was the talk of the town, there is no way in the world that Javier Bardem is not winning for his incredible acting in “No Country For Old Men”

DIRECTOR - MOTION PICTURE

The best film of the year should have the best directing and therefore we’re going to go with Ethan Coen & Joel Coen for “No Country For Old Men”

SCREENPLAY - MOTION PICTURE

The best written script this year was “No Country for Old Men” by Ethan Coen & Joel Coen if they miss out on the award look for newcomer Diablo Cody to win for the refreshing and witty “Juno”

ORIGINAL SCORE - MOTION PICTURE

Alberto Iglesias is getting a lot of talk for his work on “The Kite Runner” and I think that Michael Brook, Kaki King and Eddie Vedder’s work for “Into The Wild” was captivating, but it might be the year for Dario Marianelli and “Atonement” our pick.

ORIGINAL SONG - MOTION PICTURE

We are big Pearl Jam fans and we’re going to go with the sensible choice of
“Guaranteed” from “Into The Wild” with Music & Lyrics By: Eddie Vedder. If they want to go quirky look for “Enchanted” or “Walk Hard” to win, but we’ll go with the safe and intersting choice that very much fit into the Sean Penn directed movie seamlessly.

Golden Globe award

TELEVISION

TELEVISION SERIES - DRAMA

We’re big fans of AMC’s “Mad Men” but its hard to go wrong by going British and that would mean “The Tudors” from Showtime.

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES - DRAMA

To be honest we don’t watch any of these shows other than “The Sopranos” so we aren’t the best forecasters here. I think Edie Falco does an amazing job and the Globes could want to pay tribute to the show, however we’re going to go with perrenial award show favorite Sally Field in “Brothers & Sisters”

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES - DRAMA

We don’t watch “Dexter” or “House” but my gut is telling me its going to be Hugh Laurie for his role as Dr. House in “House.”

TELEVISION SERIES - COMEDY OR MUSICAL

I’m a huge fan of “30 Rock” Showtime’s “Californication” HBO’s “Entourage” and I don’t watch “Pushing Daisies” but there’s no better choice in this category than “Extras” which airs on HBO and is produced by the BBC. Ricky Gervais wrapped up the series with a genius level one and a half hour series finale.

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES -COMEDY OR MUSICAL

Than god we don’t have to see another lame acceptance speech from America Ferrera for “Ugly Betty” which we think will win, however our choice Mary-Louise Parker for “Weeds” deserves it so much more and who can deny that Tina Fey is both hilarious and perfect in her role on “30 Rock.”

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES - COMEDY OR MUSICAL

I think we’re all sick of Steve Carell’s schtick by now and Ricky Gervais is to me a better creator than actor, so I’ll go with Alec Baldwin for his always funny performance on “30 Rock”

MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

Never saw any of the nominees in this category and that means we’ll go with the odds and the odds means HBO. They have three nominees in this category and one of which has the longest title and therefore it becomes our choice as winner - “Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee”

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

As you can probably tell we’re not big fans of the Mini-Series or the MOW (Motion Picture Made for TV) and therefore we didn’t see any of these performances, so we’ll go with Debra Messing in “The Starter Wife” cause she’s the hottest and throw in Queen Latifah as our back-up choice cause she’s black, lesbian and fat as well as known worldwide.

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

The choice here is Jim Broadbent in “Longford” not cause we saw it but because we heard he was really good in it. Look for old-timer Ernest Borgnine to get some love as well for “A Grandpa For Christmas” as the senimental choice.

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

It’s been a Katherine Heigl year, but “Grey’s Anatomy” is passe’ by now so we’ll go with Anna Paquin in “Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee” cause she’s from New Zealand.

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

Although he’s a dispicable human being (the man not the character) our choice in this category is Jeremy Piven as “Ari Gold” in “Entourage” although it would be way more awesome if Kevin Dillon won for the same show. Never forget however that old-timers William Shatner and Donald Sutherland will get the sentimental votes.
