Tom Cruise to play Fugitive Spy in SALT
Today it was announced in that Columbia Pictures is in negotiations with Terry George (HOTEL RWANDA and RESERVATION ROAD) to direct “Edwin A. Salt,” from a Kurt Wimmer screenplay. The script is being pushed as a starring vehicle for Tom Cruise and uber-producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (former Head of Production at Warner Bros.) and Sunil Perkash are attached.
The title character in EDWIN A SALT is a CIA officer who is ratted out by a former KGB Russian defector as a spy. Cruise’s character must then elude capture by the CIA, reunite with his family and prove his innocence to the world. Sounds to me like a cross between THE FUGITIVE and THE BOURNE IDENTITY.
Tom Cruise has been spending all of his non-Scientology related time acting in films such as LIONS FOR LAMBS directed by Robert Redford. Also, Cruise will appear in the Bryan Singer (SUPERMAN, X-MEN 1 and 2) directed VALKYRIE which was made for smaller Cruise/Wagner run United Artists.
VALKYRIE is a film that’s been in the news a lot lately because of the German ban on the film shooting there largely because of Tom Cruise’s membership in the Church of Scientology.
To add fuel to the German-brewed fire Cruise might also appear in MEN which Todd Phillips is set to direct that is a remake of the Doris Dorrie (love that last name) German comedy. Cruise in a comedy? Isn’t that a paradox?
