As the weekend fiinished, the mega-franchise Harry Potter’s box office adjusted northwards of $30 million to earn that film a #2 placement in its second weekend of release. The fifth Harry Potter film is now north of $207 million and is well on its way to achieving $300 million + in North America alone. I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry opened solidly for Adam Sandler and Kevin James and Universal in first place with $35 million. Hairspray, getting a solid Friday number fell into the third slot with a very impressive $27.8 million as box office averages normalized on Saturday and Sunday for the cult-following musical re-adapted from the stage and further re-adapted from the Jon Waters’ cult film.
Next week look for THE SIMPSONS movie and the Lindsay Lohan scarer I KNOW WHO KILLED ME to enter the charts. We are pretty sure that THE SIMPSONS will decimate both Harry & Larry but are looking hard at the tracking for the Lohan film to see if people realize that it isn’t a sequel to the I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER films.
