NEW RELEASES THIS WEEKEND:
Joshua
This smallish film will be released on 6 screens this Friday nationwide this weekend from Fox Searchlight. The indie cast is grade-A, but you will not see me standing in line in my Crocs and board-shorts waiting to see this one. They should have released this in September.
Rescue Dawn
This Christian Bale warm film was released on July 4th by MGM and has pulled in about $60K on 6 screens in the first two days of release. Not too shabby for a film directed by a guy who was last seen directing bears to kill his documentary subject…
Transformers
Previewing on Monday and releasing on Tuesday, Transformers is the movie to see this weekend as it has already gobbled up a very impressive $121M worldwide in just 3 days and is providing Paramount and DreamWorks with a huge franchise tent-pole type film that had alluded the Viacom studio under the Sherry Lansing frugal business tenure. Look for this film to end up at about $300M domestic and loads more Foreign where the TV property was not that strong, but the strong reviews and event-like promotion of the film will do the heavy lifting.
License to Wed
The film opened Tuesday and looks like something stupider than the last joke that was cracked from Robin Williams mouth. Earning $7.5M in 3 days of release this Mandy Moore and the dude from the Office comedy is doing slightly better than it should and disproving all reasonable people’s thoughts about summer-counter programming. Warner Bros. you broke my heart when you decided to make a film this stupid. People, don’t go and see this. You will just encourage them further!
