WHAT’S IN THE CARDS
Evan Almighty – Remember a while back, when a spec script called PASSION OF THE ARC sold for a gazillion dollars after a heated bidding war? Remember when you finally got a copy of the script and discovered it was a flaming pile of turds? This is that script. But add Steve Carell and tie it to a budding franchise and you’ve got yourself the makings of a pretty successful little comedy, right? Probably, although the fact that this fucker cost $175 million (at least) – making it the most expensive comedy evar — could put a damper on the whole “profit” thing. Well is it any good? Of course not, but if you’re a Jesus freak and have kids you might as well see it, I mean it beats staying home and self-flagellating in front of the toaster strudel with the image of Jesus that you paid three grand for on eBay, right?
1408 – Great reviews for this Stephen King shocker starring the inimitable John “Lloyd Dobler” Cusack as a guy trapped in a haunted hotel room. Spooky stuff! Boo!
A Mighty Heart – Back before YouTube turned Little Superstar into a household name, content provider Al Qaeda’s beheading videos were all the rage on the ‘net. The genre’s first big breakout star was Daniel Pearl, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal whose decap video circulated the worldwide web faster than herpes on the set of a Lindsay Lohan movie. A Mighty Heart stars Angelina “I’ve got a fucking E.T. living in my forehead” Jolie as Pearl’s wife Mariane, who has to deal with her husband’s sudden rise to fame and death and stuff. Reviews are great, but given that the film’s thoroughly depressing subject matter ain’t the way most folks want to kick off their summer, don’t expect it to break 5 million.
