Spidey 3 – Can it hit a billion?

You don’t make a movie for over $300 million dollars and not expect for it to make a billion dollars in box office gross worldwide. After all, what the studio keeps from that billion is roughly half if you get the good terms and earn most of the money in the first week or so and if most of that money isn’t coming at you from the UK (where the exhibitors are clearly thieves and they keep about ¾ of the ticket revenue to their pocket before shelling out only a ¼ to the studios.)
After 34 days of release –
Spidey 3 is at:
$321 million for North America and
$527 million for the Foreign total
Current worldwide total for Spidey 3- $848 million
Domestically the film dropped big in the 2nd weekend (61.5%) and keeps falling about 45-50% every week thereafter. Last weekend the film earned $7.6 million against not much post-Memorial Day competition. Spidey 3 should do about $4 million according to Box Office Psychics Alex Rosenblatt this weekend bringing the domestic total to $325 million. I see the film finishing in North America at about $365-$380 maximum.
Now the important piece of the puzzle- the international marketplace. Once only counted on for barely half, we can see that currently Foreign territories make up roughly 62% of the pie. As films tend to run longer in certain international territories than they do in the over-saturated North American market, it is feasible that Spidey 3’s international market share can be split 65/35 in favor of the international market.
Comparing Spidey 3 to Spidey 2 is also a good way to look at things:
After 34 days in 2004, Spidey 2 was roughly at $347 million. Despite the fact that Spidey 2 opened on the July 4th holiday that year and was smaller than Spidey 3, the film didn’t drop as much and had the benefit of being in the dead of summer with school holidays to keep the mid-week averages up high. Spidey 2 ended up finishing its theatrical run in North America with $374 million (we are forecasting $365 million for Spidey 3 however it may fall way short and only hit $355 million).
And if you look at Spidey 2’s Foreign total- the film did a total of $310 million. A number that has already been surpassed by Spidey 3.
Well the story here is simple, a universally panned film such as Spidey 3 has a higher likelihood of hitting the billion dollar level for one reason and one reason alone and that’s the international market place which is apparently booming.
