Holland’s Working Again Part II: Savage Steve helming RATKO for National Lampoon

After 18 long, torturous years of silence there’s a bounty of Savage Steve Holland news this week. As reported in today’s Variety – and scooped two days ago in our “reader comments” – Better Off Dead/How I Got Into College director Savage Steve Holland will shoot National Lampoon’s Ratko: The Dictator’s Son, a college comedy about a third world despot’s studious spawn who goes to Harvard and starts his own jug band. That’s what my version of the movie would be anyway, because jug bands are topical AND hilarious!
RATKO marks a departure from Lampoon’s usual approach to the film medium, i.e. licensing out their name and logo to any producer with the scratch to slap it on their hunk o’ dung straight-to-video boobie comedy. RATKO will be produced in-house by the comedy brand co (as was their upcoming National Lampoon’s Bagboy starring Brooke “I rent my eyebrow from an Armenian Volvo mechanic” Shields), along with shady indie production/financing partners with names like InterMedia, CineTel, and “the Russian Mafia.” I kid, I kid.
Man, National Lampoon used to be the shit. I remember finding a stack National Lampoons in my dad’s closet along with his Asian midget porn stroke mags and I read those things cover to cover. Jack Handy’s Deep Thoughts started in Lampoon. I’m not trying to be funny right now, just taking a walk down memory lane. Oh, what, you want funny? Umm… and then a bear raped me! Har har har.
