Spidey 3 Premieres in Astoria
Sam Raimi’s Spiderman 3 made its U.S. premiere in Astoria, Queens last night as part of the Tribeca Film Festival. 3,000 some-odd fans filled 14 theaters to watch latest installment in spider franchise. Why Queens? Because it’s web-slinger alter ego Peter Parker’s home town, duh. Quoth film’s donkey-esquely endowed star Toby McGuire:
“It’s an ode to where they’re from. It really grounds our films in a nice place and it feels real.”
Yeah, except its fake. See, Peter Parker is a fictional character so he’s really not from anywhere. This is what’s known as a “publicity stunt.” My idea for a publicity stunt was to release millions of real spiders into the theaters at about the halfway point, but they told me my idea was “dumb.” I guess because it wasn’t my idea for Spiderman, it was for First Daughter starring Katie Holmes. Whatever. Those hacks at Fox were just jealous of my marketing genius. As evidenced by the time I slipped roofies into the free soda at the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants premiere. Genius! Of course I didn’t work for the studio or anything, I was just trying to get Amber Tamblyn into the back of van so I could take her to my torture pit, or the “torture pit of LOVE” as I like to call it.

According to a costume designer on the first Spiderman film, it took a great deal of effort to make a suit which was form-fitting yet concealed McGuire’s prodigious appendage. They feared people would think it was an intentional bit of subtle eroticism ala Batman’s “nipples” in the Schumaker films.
But yeah, according to this particular costume designer, Toby’s got a alligator’s tail.
